Fair Work Case Studies

Many tourism and hospitality businesses in Edinburgh, are already fully committed and on their Fair Work journey. Below is a selection of case studies to inspire you to take action, and to showcase the work of businesses leading the way:

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions – Were the first tourist attraction to be awarded the Wellness Charter from Hospitality Health. By achieving Wellness Charter certification, a business demonstrates a commitment to providing proactive support, training managers, offering access to wellbeing resources, challenging stigma, and promoting work-life balance, ultimately creating a culture where both employees and the business can thrive. In addition to offering rates of pay in excess of the real Living Wage, they have an attractive package for employees, which includes a wide range of benefits.

Mercat Tours – In addition to being a Living Wage Employer, this award-winning tour company are also an accredited Living Hours Employer. The Living Hours standard asks employers to provide the right to decent notice periods for shifts, with guaranteed payment if shifts are cancelled within this notice period; the right to a contract that reflects accurate hours worked; and a guaranteed minimum of 16 hours a week. In other words, secure, flexible and permanent contracts. Mercat Tours also became B Corp accredited in 2024, the first UK attraction to achieve this.

Serving the Future Project has published 5 case studies, focusing on how employers within the tourism and hospitality sector implement Fair Work practices.
