The tourism industry in Scotland is worth at least £11bn to the economy and employs over 217,000 people in Scotland. It is also a sector that currently has a low concentration of data science expertise, but the use of data has the potential for real impact within the sector.
Come along to hear from 5 key projects taking place using data for Edinburgh’s tourism sector. The projects were part of the Edinburgh Tourism Innovation Challenge and have benefited from Innovation funding supported through the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group and Scottish Enterprise.
They will share their projects and present their work to:
- inspire other tourism businesses to unlock the potential of their data
- exemplify to the data science community the value of applying technology to the tourism sector
- unlock further collaborations; funding opportunities and partnership through networking
There will also be an opportunity for the attendees to mix with each other in a workshop style setting which will focus on innovative ways to utilise data from the tourism sector and beyond and will aim to answer some of the questions the tourism industry have about data and how best to use it.
Our target audience is approximately 60 tourism and technology professionals and students from the public, private and third sector. At the end of the event we will announce an overall winner of the whole challenge and as attendees you will have the opportunity to vote in a people’s choice award.
The Edinburgh Tourism Innovation Challenge:
The Edinburgh Tourism Innovation Challenge (ETIC) was developed as a three stage programme that aims to create data-driven innovation for Edinburgh’s tourism industry by connecting Scotland’s tourism and tech/digital sector. The first stage of ETIC was the Challenge Weekend (October 2017) where over 120 attendees of entrepreneurially minded data and tourism enthusiasts and professionals came together to collaborate on tourism related datasets from Scottish public, private and third sector organisations involved in tourism – eg data from taxi companies, attractions, hotels etc. This weekend was sponsored and supported by Intechnology Wifi, Scottish Enterprise and The Data Lab. Following this, we launched the Innovation Fund, which offered 5 projects up to £3,000 for data-focused tourism projects in Edinburgh – the fund is supported by The Data Lab, Scottish Enterprise and ETAG. It is these 5 projects that will present at the event.
