Interview 5: Jinny Xiong, ETAG

What company do you work for?
Edinburgh Tourism Action Group

What is your job title?
Chinese Social Media Project Manager

On a day-to-day basis what do you do at work?
I focus on discovering what’s happening in Edinburgh and exploring better ways to share it with the China market. Most of my day is spent on social media — planning, creating fun and engaging posts with our team, reviewing performance data, and analysing what clicks with our audience. I also maintain relationships with our partners, by sharing content ideas, KOL visits, and sharing market updates.

Where did your career in tourism begin?
Almost 2 years ago, I applied for the part-time Content Assistant and joined the amazing and creative team. With the support and encouragements from my manager and colleagues, I took my first step into the tourism industry and embraced a new chapter.

What do you love about your job?
There are many reasons, but one of the most important is the incredible support and encouragement I have received from the people I work with — our partners, my colleagues, and of course, our followers and community. Every time I receive a message or comment from someone who had a great time in Edinburgh thanks to our guides and travel tips, I feel genuinely happy.

In once sentence how would you sell Edinburgh to a potential visitor?
Don’t trust the weather report — trust Edinburgh: it’s where magic finds you.

What’s your favourite place in Edinburgh and why?
That’s a very tough question! Recently, my favourite place has been the Meadows (sunny day version), where I could happily spend hours just lying there. I also love picking a bench at random and reading the messages people have written on it.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in tourism?
As a newcomer in the tourism industry, I’ve learned to embrace uncertainty. Trends, people’s preferences, and even the whole environment can shift in an instant, so it may be important to stay ready to turn challenges into exciting opportunities. Keeping an open mind and continuously learning from people in this dynamic field.

We’re celebrating the past 25 years of tourism in Edinburgh, but looking forward what would you like to see happen in next 25 years for Edinburgh as tourist destination?
By balancing culture, innovation, and sustainability, Edinburgh will remain a welcoming, vibrant city loved by both locals and tourists worldwide.
