Interview 4: Rob Turnbull, EICC

What company do you work for?
Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC)

What is your job title?
Sustainability Manger

On a day-to-day basis what do you do at work?
My role varies day-to-day, but I primarily monitor our energy and water usage by checking meter readings and identifying trends or issues, which I report to the relevant teams. I work with clients to ensure their events are sustainable and produce Event Impact Reports on request. I also manage our Green Team, oversee sustainability accreditations such as Green Tourism and ISO 14001, and complete sustainability award applications to highlight our best practices. Additionally, I speak at national and international events to share best practice and drive sustainability in the industry. My work ensures the EICC remains a leader in sustainable events.

Where did your career in tourism begin?
I began my career in academia, teaching engineering at a local university. Seeking a new challenge, I was drawn to the sustainability manager role at the local conference centre, intrigued by how the theoretical knowledge I had been teaching could be applied in practice. Since taking on the role, I have discovered it extends far beyond data analysis, greatly expanding my skill set and providing opportunities to engage with both my local community and the wider industry.

What do you love about your job?
I love the variety of my work, no two days are the same, and each brings new challenges. Working in the events industry, I have discovered a community of people who are incredibly passionate about what they do, dedicating countless hours to planning and preparation to ensure every event runs seamlessly. Each department operates to such an exceptionally high standard, and it is truly inspiring to see what they can achieve, from hosting tennis matches, becoming a festival venue to staging large exhibitions and conferences.

In once sentence how would you sell Edinburgh to a potential visitor?
Exploring Edinburgh, feels like stepping through history, from its ancient past to its vibrant modern-day culture, with hidden gems waiting to be discovered around every corner

What’s your favourite place in Edinburgh and why?
I often enjoy walking at Harlow Reservoir or along Cramond Beach, but one of my favourite places to visit is the Japanese garden at Lauriston Castle. It’s a beautifully colourful and serene spot, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of daily life.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in tourism?
Go for it, you will never find a more skilled group of passionate people who are always willing to help!

We’re celebrating the past 25 years of tourism in Edinburgh, but looking forward what would you like to see happen in next 25 years for Edinburgh as tourist destination?
The city offers a wealth of unique experiences and a rich history that can be explored with ease, far beyond its famous events. This year, the EICC celebrates its 30th anniversary, highlighting its long-standing role in attracting world-class events and business tourism to the city. Visiting Edinburgh should be synonymous with every kind of tourism imaginable, as it truly has something for everyone, and so much more.
