Interview 2: Shona Cook, Edinburgh Bus Tours

What is your job title?
Lead Tour Guide

On a day-to-day basis what do you do at work?
I split my time between giving tours myself and the recruitment and training of new guides alongside the continuous assessment of existing guides to maintain 5-Star performance throughout.

Where did your career in tourism begin?
3 years ago when I applied to be a tour guide with Edinburgh Bus Tours. I was promoted to Lead Tour Guide late last year. Before moving into tourism, I went to university, studied law and was a Procurator Fiscal through in the West of Scotland for many years.

What do you love about your job?
Meeting people who are visiting the city and showing off our wonderful capital.

In once sentence how would you sell Edinburgh to a potential visitor?
One of the most beautiful cities anywhere in the world with everything to offer from a rich history to a contemporary touch- perfection!

What’s your favourite place in Edinburgh and why?
The Georgian House. An important part of the history of Edinburgh comes to life.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in tourism?
Learn as much as you can about your subject and go to work each day with a smile on your face.

We’re celebrating the past 25 years of tourism in Edinburgh, but looking forward what would you like to see happen in next 25 years for Edinburgh as tourist destination?
We need to sell the ‘totality’ of Edinburgh better, not just individual attractions. People seem surprised when they come that there is so much to see and do.
