AI is already changing how visitors plan, book and experience their trips, and how businesses forecast demand, manage staffing and market themselves. But for many owners and managers in our sector, the hardest part is knowing where to start.
The Data Lab is offering a fully funded online course, Introduction to Data and AI for SME Leaders, designed specifically for business leaders with no prior data or AI experience. No technical knowledge is needed.
What’s involved
- Self-paced online learning of around 14–16 hours, spread over four weeks
- Learn alongside a cohort of other SME leaders
- Six intakes running between September 2026 and March 2027
What you’ll gain
- A clear, practical understanding of what AI is and what it can do for smaller businesses
- The ability to spot realistic opportunities for AI within your own operation
- Greater confidence in making data-informed decisions, and a sense of sensible next steps
Cost
The course is free to SMEs and social enterprises, funded by the Scottish Government. It is provided as Minimal Financial Assistance under the Subsidy Control Act 2022, so applicants will need to confirm it won’t take them over the £315,000 limit across the relevant three-year period.
The course forms part of the AI Leadership Academy, delivered under Scotland’s AI Strategy 2026–2031 by The Data Lab with Scottish Enterprise, Business Gateway, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and South of Scotland Enterprise. Funding runs until 31 March 2027, so we’d encourage businesses to apply early.
